Cosylab Participates in Developing High-Performance RF SoC for Quantum Gyroscope Control

Publish date:
15. June 2023
Cosylab participates in the “GIRAFFE” project, a three-year industrial research project on quantum sensing technologies that aims to study sensing principles based on the precession of nuclear spins and implement them in a solid-state platform. Using sensing principles based on fundamental particles’ intrinsic quantum properties (spins) represents a new path to fundamentally better sensing performance.

With recent advances in autonomous vehicles, the need for reliable inertial-based navigation independent of external satellite referencing is increasing. An essential component of these systems are gyroscopes – sensors that can measure rotation and angular velocity about three orthogonal axes.

The GIRAFFE (GYRoscopes for Autonomous driving and Flight assistancE) project presents the next step in inertial sensing technology’s performance, miniaturisation and energy efficiency increase. The project results will be of high practical relevance for the automotive market and the aerospace industry. The project combines quantum sensing technology with a holistic expert approach to design and integration at the magnetic, optical, and RF system levels and practical, domain-specific knowledge of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) use cases.

“At GIRAFFE, Cosylab will develop the hardware and firmware of the quantum gyroscope. Ultimately, the hardware part will be able to control the NV centre in the diamond. We will support two frequency outputs ranging from DC to 3.5 GHz and control the laser and data acquisition for the feedback signal. The feedback signal will be pre-processed and filtered before passing to the software. What excites us most about this project is the development of brand-new technology in a fast-growing and evolving sector of quantum sensing,” said Jernej Kokalj, FPGA Engineer and the GIRAFFE project manager at Cosylab.

Cosylab is a member of a consortium led by Silicon Austria Labs, with the University of Stuttgart, Beyond Gravity Austria, AVL List GmbH, 4ActiveSystems, and Infineon Technologies Villach. This project is funded within the framework of Quantum Austria by the Austrian “Nationalstiftung für Forschung, Technologie und Entwicklung” (National Foundation for Research, Technology and Development), the FFG and FWF, with support of the Federal Ministry for Science and Research (BMBWF).
