Advanced Intelligent Ground Information System – Project NIZIS
Project NIZIS
Technology readiness level: from TRL5 to TRL9
Keywords: space industry, circular economy, energy efficiency, green deal, innovation
Brief description of project activities
The project outcome will be a globally unique, fully automated, intelligent, and autonomous ground information system, which will radically change the concept of using satellite technologies for end users: they will be enabled to perceive the satellite platform/satellite only as a digital endpoint, on which they will transmit and receive the desired data. Project NIZIS is the answer and solution to the future needs of the space industry, which is one of the few economic sectors that has achieved constant annual economic growth in the last 50 years and is one of the key sectors both for improving the standard of living in general and for mitigating climate change on Earth. The solution itself consists of several segments, which can also be marketed separately, each of them demonstrates significant and innovative improvements in relation to the existing market situation. With a new membrane structure system and the use of new materials, a new overpressure membrane structure with extended service life will be developed. A partial transfer of the communication/process chain to the cloud service will be carried out. Implementing efficient hardware acceleration of the radio frequency (RF) processing part in dedicated hardware will enable time and energy savings. The principle of self-sufficiency with the help of renewable energy will be introduced. With introduction of new techniques for creating a comprehensive intelligent chain of the earth’s information system, the consumption of raw materials, non-recyclable materials and energy in the entire process will be reduced, thus reducing the negative impact on the environment. With the help of artificial intelligence algorithms, a demonstration of the use-value of satellite technologies in dealing with climate change and achieving the goals of carbon neutrality will be carried out. The final contribution of the project will be the demonstration of precise irrigation of agricultural areas and the optimization of the use of phytopharmaceuticals using the NIZIS technological solution.

Advanced Intelligent Ground Information System (NIZIS) project, has been approved for co-funding through the “Incentives for R&D projects” under the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovenian government, funded by the EU and its NextGenerationEU program. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the European Commission can be held responsible for them.
“The pilot demonstration project will showcase the operation of an energy-efficient and intelligent ground information system. It will address the future needs of the space industry for an infrastructural solution that will not only establish a satellite connection and stream raw data but would also process the content and enable direct communication and control with satellite platforms,” underlines Joze Zobec, who will oversee the NIZIS project.
